Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Sarah Adwoa Safo has indicated government’s commitment towards eliminating the challenges the most vulnerable in Ghana face as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic at the United Nations High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development on Tuesday.

The UN is holding its 9th Session of the High Level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development under the theme, “Ensuring that No One is Left Behind” from Tuesday 6th July to Thursday 15th July at the UN Headquaters, New York.

The HLPF is the main UN platform on Sustainable Development with a central role in the follow-up and review of the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

All UN Member States as well as representatives from civil society organizations participate in the HLPF, which meets under the auspices of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

Hon. Sarah Adwoa Safo, was invited by the UN Economic and Social Council to speak on the protection of the poorest and the vulnerable from the COVID 19 crisis and empowering them to realise the Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs).

In her Address, Hon. Adwoa Safo highlighted some of government’s key initiatives to help all Ghanaians, especially the vulnerable, to mitigate the effects of the Covid 19 pandemic including the Social Protection Policy and the Ghana Cares program.

“In Ghana, the government has started deliberate interventions to target the vulnerable in society.

“These include the: Social Protection Policy, National Gender Policy, School Feeding Policy, Free Compulsory Basic Education, Free Senior High School, Children’s Act, Disability Act, National Health Insurance Act, National Plan of Action on Elimination of Worst Forms of Child Labor, National Framework on Early Child Marriage and the Strategic Plan to Address Teenage Pregnancy are just some of the legislations carved to protect and promote women, girls, the young and the vulnerable” she mentioned.

She continued, “The President, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo has also initiated the Ghana COVID-19 Alleviation and Revitalization of Enterprise Support initiative (GHANA CARES).

“This initiative is an audacious GHȻ100 billion post COVID programme to stabilize, revitalize and transform Ghana’s economy to create jobs and prosperity for Ghanaians over a three-year period. This will go a long way to help Ghanaians, especially the most vulnerable to navigate the effects of the pandemic in our country.”

On the effects of the Global Covid 19 Pandemic on adolescents worldwide, she mentioned that it would be essential to take an intersectional approach that addresses the different factors that may impede adolescents’ well-being due to the effects of the COVID 19 pandemic.

“Everywhere, adolescents suffer the consequences of COVID-19, including isolation from their peers, interruption of their education and increased vulnerability to sexual abuse, and this has affected their physical and mental health.

“It is essential to take an intersectional approach that addresses the different factors that may impede adolescents’ well-being.
Due to its multi-dimensional nature, multiple sectors must unite around the common objective of improved adolescent well-being.

“Therefore, we must align efforts across and beyond United Nations partners together with adolescents and youth. We are pleased that steps towards such an alignment are underway, building on ongoing adolescent-related strategies and initiatives” she stressed.

Hon Sarah Adwoa Safo is leading the call to accelerate action and invest in the youth towards the advancement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

President Akufo-Addo, on Sunday, 11th July 2021, commissioned the 85-bed Central Gonja District Hospital, located in Buipe, in the Savannah Region, at the start of his 2-day tour of the Region

The Buipe Hospital, whose construction commenced in 2018, is one of six (6) medical installations for which Government secured an 80-million-euro facility from Raiffesen Bank of Austria.

The hospital, together with five (5) others in Somanya, Sawla, Bamboi, Tolon, and Ketu North, was constructed by Vamed Engineering GmbH of Austria, with President Akufo-Addo, on 20th October 2020, commissioning the sixty (60) bed Ultra-Modern Hospital for Weta, in the Ketu North District.

The Buipe Hospital is an 85-bed hospital which is fitted with an out-patient department, Radiology unit, Laboratory, Pharmacy, Dental Unit, male and female wards, as well as paediatric and maternity units.

Indeed, prior to the construction of the hospital in Buipe, its residents had to rely on the Teaching Hospital at Tamale, or the Holy Family Hospital in Techiman. Considering the distances to be travelled from Buipe to Tamale or to Techiman, it had become imperative that Government constructs a health facility in Buipe to take of the health needs of the people of the Central Gonja District.

The President was hopeful that the hospital will help improve the health needs of the people of the district.

Indeed, in addition to the newly constructed Buipe District Hospital, President Akufo-Addo also revealed that Government has constructed health facilities in Mpaha, Digma and Tosinape and Kigberipe, all in the Central Gonja district.

Earlier in the day, the President paid a courtesy call on the Overlord of Gonja, the Yagbonwura, Tutumba Boresa Sulemana Jakpa, to thank him and the Region for the support offered the New Patriotic Party in the 2020 elections.

Touching on the request for potable drinking water made by the Yagbonwura, President Akufo-Addo indicated that he had already cut the sod for the construction of the Damongo Water Supply to address the problem.

He explained that COVID-19 had delayed the implementation of the project, “but I am happy to inform you that by the first week of August the contractor will be moving to site to begin work.”

New RCC Building
President Akufo-Addo also visited the site of the construction of a new 3-Storey Regional Co-ordinating Council (RCC) Administration Block for the Savannah Region, located at Damongo.

The RCC building is currently 70% complete, with concrete works, blockwork, plastering works, roofing, door frame, electrical pipework and cabling and plumbing pipework all completed.

Indeed, in line with directives of the President to ensure a spatial allocation of state institutions in the newly created regions, a 2-Storey Administration block for Regional Education Directorate is also being constructed at Damongo, a 2-Storey Administration block for Regional Health Directorate at Daboya, a 2-Storey Administration block for Regional Agric Directorate at Bole, and a 2-storey Administration block for Regional Feeder Roads Department at Salaga.

BoG Governor commissions 65-bed Bank Hospital for staff, general public

The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Ernest Addison, has commissioned a 65-bed hospital facility for staff of the central bank and the general public.

Speaking at a ceremony in Accra on July 8, 2021, Dr Ernest Addison explaining the rationale for the construction of the €80 million euros edifice said it was geared towards augmenting quality healthcare delivery for citizens in the country.

“Given the size and facilities at the previous Bank Clinic, the statistics clearly showed an uncongenial working environment, characterized by general congestion and clientele dissatisfaction. Furthermore, total active and retired staff population had increased to over 3,000, with a dependent population of about 10,000, which was projected to exceed 15,000 in the coming years.”

“These numbers struck a chord with the Bank’s Management as it was obvious that the Bank Clinic was faced with limited facilities which constrained adequate provision of quality health care for the client population and required urgent action,” the Governor explained.

He continued, “To address this problem, Management of the Bank in 2012, mandated the then General Services Department and the Medical Department to develop a Needs Assessment to form the basis for the development of a hospital for the Bank.

“Through a Competitive Tender Process in 2013, a Design and Build Contract was signed between the Bank and Universal Hospitals Group (UHG) for the construction of a 65-Bed Hospital on the Bank’s property at East Cantonments at a cost of about €80 million Euros.”

The construction of the Hospital started under the former Governors of the Bank of Ghana, the late Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur, Dr Henry Wampah and Dr Abdul Nashiru Issahaku and was followed through by the current Governors of the Bank, Dr Ernest Addison, Mrs Elsie Addo Awadzi and Dr Maxwell Opoku-Afari.

The hospital which is located at East Cantonments will serve as a commercial entity operating as a general hospital, to provide world-class OPD services, diagnostic services, and medical urology.
