Two hundred and eighty-one students will graduate first-class at the 2018/2019 University of Lagos (UNILAG) graduation ceremonies, scheduled for July 6-8.

Graduates from the University of Lagos (UNILAG)

The University of Lagos says 15,753 students will graduate from the school at its 51st graduation ceremony July 6-8.

Institutional Vice-Chancellor Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, who revealed this at a press conference prior to the convocation on Wednesday in Lagos, said 281 of the graduates will receive first-class diplomas.

Mr. Ogundipe revealed that the top graduate, Alimi Adedeji of the Faculty of Science, led the pack with a cumulative average (GPA) of 4.98 out of 5 possible points.

“Let me also add that a graduate, Opeyemi Popoola, from the economics department is the best graduate student this year with a GPA of 4.90,” the vice-chancellor said.

The vice-chancellor, who listed many of the institution’s accomplishments despite the bitter scourge of the coronavirus pandemic, said the university had attracted more than N14 billion in research grants for university projects and non-academics.

This year’s convening ceremony comes more than a year after a brutal cancellation of the ceremony which Ogundipe attributed to “self-interest” and “disinformation”.

He said; “You all remember that on Monday March 2, 2020, we were gathered in this room to begin the activities of the 51st graduation ceremony of the University which was then to be held from March 9 to 12, 2020, but it was turned out that the ceremonies canceled due to the personal interest of some people. You all knew it was former pro-chancellor Olawale Babalakin who misinformed the Education Ministry and caused the convocation ceremonies to be canceled.

“The cost of cancellation financially, emotionally and materially cannot be measured.

“This event represented a dark moment in the history of our university, but it was also an opportunity for us to learn new lessons on how to strengthen our institutions and processes.”

Mr. Ogundipe said that following the cancellation of the summons, the school administration could not access the funds, the budget was not approved and “the general administration of the University has reached its lowest level “.

He appreciated the federal government and President Muhammadu Buhari as a visitor to the institution for their intervention in times of crisis as he “sympathizes with the graduate students who have had to wait so long to finally summon.”

According to the vice-chancellor, the three-day convocation will culminate with the graduation of a total of 15,753 students.

He also announced that a 71-year-old student will be the oldest to earn a doctorate in the school’s history.
